Speech Title:    Smart Integration of Energy and Transport Systems

Abstract: Electrical power and transport systems evolved throughout the 20th century to provide adequate electricity supply and transport that our civilization now rely on. Given the concerns about the security of energy supply, greenhouse gas emissions and climate change, the challenge now is to maintain sustainable, secure and affordable energy and transport systems. This has led to increased interest in moving towards renewable energy generation and electric transport, which are seen as the way forward to provide sustainable energy and transport.

The increased deployment of renewable energy sources and electric vehicles makes it difficult to control the grid system and also difficult to meet the increased electricity demand needed to charge electric vehicles. However, smart control of the electricity grid and charging of electric vehicles can provide dynamic supply-demand balance and therefore provide opportunities for both the grid and electric vehicles.

This talk will give an overview of the challenges due to increased deployment of renewable energy sources and electric vehicles. It will also cover opportunities that emerging technologies provide not only to meet these challenges but also to foster new operational models that will help maintain reliable and affordable electricity and transport systems as well as improve their efficiency and lower their environmental impacts.
